Impact of Interpol Red Notices with France 24
In an interview with France 24, Managing Partner Sandra Grossman discussed how Interpol plays a critical role in addressing the realities of globalized crime and facilitating international law enforcement cooperation. She emphasized that Interpol has clear benefits when used appropriately and has achieved meaningful successes in legitimate cross-border investigations.
However, Grossman also explained that the system is deeply flawed and increasingly vulnerable to abuse. Authoritarian regimes often misuse Interpol Red Notices as political weapons, making it far too easy to target individuals who have fallen out of favor with their governments rather than genuine criminals. In these cases, Red Notices are exploited to pursue the arrest of dissidents, journalists, and activists.
She further noted that because each country determines how it recognizes and enforces Red Notices, their interpretation varies widely across jurisdictions. This inconsistency has serious consequences within the U.S. immigration system, where Red Notices may be used to justify detention or advance deportation proceedings—placing vulnerable individuals at risk of persecution despite the lack of uniform due process protections.
