Becki Young Speaks to Law360 about Loosened I-9 Rules due to Virus
March 24th, 2020
The federal government announced last week that it will loosen some in-person document review requirements for employment eligibility verification for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency. For the time being, employers are allowed to review 1-9 documents electronically if the organization is working remotely in response to the virus. Employers will be expected to perform an in-person review of the documents once normal business operations resume. Employers were also given an extra 60 days to respond to audits if they were served with a notice of inspection in March, saving employers and their attorneys from having to collect physical documents while the CDC is urging Americans to stay home.
Becki Young was asked by Law360 for comment.
"I think this will be a huge relief," said Young. "This is what we've been hoping for all week." Young also commented on the COVID-19-related suspension of premium processing, warning foreign nationals that green card applications are going to take longer than expected.
